Sky Arts Ignition: The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
Irresistible…a bravura piece of theatrical invention. The Irish Mail on Sunday
Terrific team performances…a revelation Sunday Business Post
Dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure, Mahagonny is a city founded by three stranded fugitives - ruthless entrepreneur Begbick and her henchmen Moses and Fatty - where cash is king and anything goes. The downtrodden and desperate flood in to savour the city’s delights and take their ease, reveling in joyous consumption and signing up to the rule of misrule until they discover the sting in the tail; in Mahagonny, the greatest crime of all is the inability to pay.
Irish soprano Claudia Boyle stared as the enigmatic hooker Jenny Smith, who lead the Albama Song; and the renegade ringleaders were sung by Anne Marie Gibbons (Begbick), John Molloy (Trinity Moses), and Ross Scanlon (Fatty the Procurator) with Julian Hubbard as the existential rebel Jimmy Mahoney. This project was the 2014 recipient of Sky Arts Ignition, part of Sky’s commitment to the cultural sector. Sky is supported the project through direct investment as well as on-air, marketing and digital support.
