Giuseppe Verdi

Rigoletto

When a father’s love goes too far…. when his instinct to protect blinds him to the consequences…. when innocence meets debauchery…. the result is a potent cocktail of lust, power, revenge and betrayal, all distilled into a musical experience of unparalleled intensity.

Critically acclaimed theatre director Selina Cartmell (winner Best Director Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards) dramatically reimagined the piece in a newly commissioned contemporary translation by Irish playwright Marina Carr, which transported this medieval tale into our time and our world.

Based on Victor Hugo’s play Le roi s’amuse, the tragic story revolves around the attempts of a desperate father Rigoletto and his efforts to protect Gilda his innocent daughter from the amorous attentions of his amoral boss The Duke.

Sung in English, Rigoletto was full of exquisite duets and instantly recognisable music– especially the famous tenor aria 'La donna è mobile' (All women are fickle).

"Bruno Caproni is a superb Rigoletto. He captures the character's mixture of the unpleasant and the loveable…It's impossible not to be moved by his duets with his adored daughter Gilda. Emma Nash, as Gilda, has a beautifully controlled voice…her singing throughout is exquisite.****"
The Irish Mail
"With a new translation by Marina Carr and a cutting-edge director, Selina Cartmell, the Opera Theatre Company promises a provocative take on a classic that has some of the finest duets and catchiest tunes in the opera song book."
