George Frideric Handel
Xerxes
Hats off to OTC for an excellent production of Xerxes, which is now on a national tour. Do see this if you can – everything is good! - The Opera Page
Best known for its exquisite opening aria sung to a tree, this witty comedy bristles with thwarted passions. A tangled web of lovers get caught in the romantic crossfire as they plot, connive and scheme in Handel’s glorious opera Xerxes. King Xerxes and his brother Arsamene are in love with Romilda. But she and her manipulative little sister Atalanta both love Arsamene. Meanwhile, Xerxes' jilted fiancée Amastre stalks the scene, disguised as a man, looking for revenge.
Opera Theatre Company celebrates the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death with his most popular opera Xerxes sung in English.
