In a new translation by Roddy Doyle. Featuring RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Dublin Theatre Festival at Gaiety Theatre 29 Sept and 1 & 2 Oct. Cork Opera House 5 & 7 Oct
Don Giovanni is a legendary nobleman and the greatest seducer of all time. He loves women. Not individual women, no, he loves all women regardless of their size, shape or marital status.
One of Mozart’s operatic masterpieces, Don Giovanni tells the tale of a ‘womaniser’, his thirst for pleasure and his complete lack of regard for the human consequences. A huge hit with audiences in its day, Don Giovanni presents a thrilling story to audiences, weaving the enduring themes of guilt, regret, love and death.
Opera Theatre Company has commissioned Roddy Doyle to create a brand new translation of this iconic opera which will make it immediately accessible to Irish audiences. Don Giovanni features the RTÉ Concert Orchestra with Fergus Sheil conducting and stars Welsh baritone David Kempster in the title role together with an outstanding cast of Irish and international opera stars, including soprano Máire Flavin as Donna Anna, mezzo soprano Tara Erraught as Donna Elvira, bass baritone John Molloy as Leporello and Daire Halpin as Zerlina. Tenor Alexander Sprague sings Don Ottavio, with baritone Brendan Collins as Masetto and bass-baritone Jonathan May as Commendatore. Directed by Gavin Quinn ( Pan Pan Theatre) and with design by Bruno Schwengl and lighting design by Sinead McKenna, this brand new production of Don Giovanni marks OTC’s first presentation at the Gaiety Theatre Dublin, a return to Cork Opera House and is part of the company’s 30th anniversary programme celebrating 30 years of opera for everyone.

"“strong performances across the board “ ★★★★ "
"“Fergus Sheil, the OTC artistic director, conducts the RTE Concert Orchestra which responds with real Mozartean flourish to his baton” "

"“His infusion of local slang gives the libretto a lively energy and makes the characters more accessible… it also brings a welcome earthiness to a soaring musical performance by Fergus Sheil, conducting the RTE Concert Orchestra and a powerful cast led by David Kempster”. "
