Georges Bizet
Carmen
The thing lives, breathes, and clutches at you emotionally, and is another triumph for this wonderfully plucky company Irish Theatre Magazine
Award winning director Gavin Quinn set the action in a gritty urban landscape, stripping the tale back to the bare essentials. Bang up-to-date with Gardaí, streetwise factory girls and dodgy dealings at the local pub, this production echoed Bizet’s original opera while featuring those who were not often seen on the opera stage: the working classes and the disenfranchised. Sparks fly as Don José’s fatal attraction to Carmen evolves from passionate love to intense murderous jealousy.
Sultry and seductive, Carmen will mesmerise both young and old alike, with its instantly recognisable and irresistible score. Irish mezzo-soprano Imelda Drumm plays the bewitching temptress in this riveting tale of lust, obsession and betraya with American tenor Michael Wade Lee as the ardent lover Don José.
Bizet’s timeless masterpiece, which has gripped audiences since its premiere continues to delight the modern listener with lots of sizzling opera hits including the unforgettable Toreador’s song.
